Best Places to Visit in Assam
Kaziranga National park
This park is one of the prominent landmarks in Assam and boasts a rich natural habitat of the one-horned rhinos, wild buffalos and elephants, swamp deer, gibbons, langurs, fishing cats, and about 15 threatened mammals that benefit from the sufficient food resources and Government’s protection.
The best way to tour this park is by booking a jeep or an elephant safari to experience the park up close.
Kakochang Waterfalls
This scintillating waterfall is located near Kaziranga Park and is a perfect spot for picnics. Also, explore the ruins of Numaligarh nearby.
Pobitora Wildlife Sanctuary
This Sanctuary is popular among bird lovers as it is home to approximately 2000 migratory birds. You can reach this place from Guwahati by an hour’s drive along the mighty Brahmaputra River.
Silchar
Located on the banks of the Barak River, Silchar is a heritage site and erstwhile capital of the Kachari Kingdom.

It is a World Heritage site by Enesco and the Tea capital of the world. Jorhat was the capital of the erstwhile Ahom Dynasty. It is the cultural capital of Assam as well. Visit this place to buy tea as well as unique jewelry prepared by skillful artisans who make both traditional and contemporary pieces.
Majuli Island
It is a large river island in Jorhat on the Brahmaputra River. This place is famous for the numerous monasteries built by the Vaishnavite saint Srimanta Sankardeva. You can also spot numerous birds like Kingfisher, Purple Moorhen, Kingfisher, and White-breasted Waterhen here.
Tinsukia
In Tinsukia do not miss the Nine- pond Na Phukri Park, Bell temples dedicated to Shiva, the amazing Railway Heritage Park and Dibru Saikhowa National Park, Barekuri Village home to the endangered Hollock Gibbons
Dispur
Dispur is the capital of Assam and lies within the large city of Guwahati.
Check out the Bashishta ashram on the confluence of 3 rivers and the Tea auction markets that are famous here. Textile lovers should not miss the Sualkuchi Weavers village to buy intricate Mekhala Chador.
Hajo
Hajo is a pilgrimage center for people of 3 religions namely Hindus, Muslims, and Buddhists.
- Manikut Parbat is a 10-century temple complex with shrines of Shivism, Vaishnavism, and Shaktisim
- Buddhists believe that Buddha died here and Hayagriva temple in this town is sacred to them.
- Muslims throng Hajo to pay their respects to the Giaysuddin Aulia Tomb built in the 17th century.
Agnigarh Hill
This hill stands on the banks of the river Brahmaputra and has a legend associated with it of how a ruler Banasura had kept his daughter hidden in a fort surrounded by fire so that she would not meet and marry her beloved Anirudha, the grandson of Lord Krishna. The legend of Banasura and Usha keeps recurring in many places in Assam.
Talatal Ghar
Those interested in history and architecture can head to Talatghar situated about 4 km away from Sivasagar in Assam. Built by Ahom kings Rudra Singhaa and King Rajeswar Singha, it was an army base with many tunnels and underground floors.
Assam Rajyik State Museum
Know and appreciate the lifestyle and culture of the Assamese by visiting the well-preserved exhibits in the Assam Rajyik State Museum. The exhibits include stone and copper inscriptions, coins, local costumes, crafts, folk art, arms, terracotta, stone, and metal objects dating back to the 5th century.
