Time seems to have stood still in this fishing village, as it is not far from urban Mumbai, yet retains the charm of the simplicity of yesteryear. 

The beaches seem untouched by man, abound with golden and fine sands, palm trees, and coconut trees, and the laid-back atmosphere is what can be considered Uttan’s trademark. Of course, you should not miss the local flavors. The fishing village has a range of delicious specialties, and of course, the main specialties are seafood.

What is Uttan famous for?

When Uttan is mentioned, it is usually about the beaches. It boasts clear and calm waters, and of course long and sandy beaches. Of course, only if you want to, the locals won’t come up to you and bother you. 

Seafood is the main diet among the population. Here you can taste East Indian cuisine. It includes fish curry and rice, vindaloo, sorpotel and hand-breads. Just a 30-40 minute boat ride away, Uttan also boasts of its Uttan Vashi island. There you will encounter only stones and trees. It is rarely visited, so you can imagine the tranquility that reigns there. It is often called the Tree of Life island because traditionally the fishing community goes there and holds prayers. After that, they have a picnic and enjoy with the immediate family.

Irmitri fort is a fort since the 17th century, and with a steep climb, you can see the Arabian Sea, the Vasai Fort, Borivali National Park, and Essel World Park. It’s worth every step spent to the top.

Uttan Beach – During weekdays there’s no crowd, which makes it a peaceful beach. You should be careful when entering the water, there are stones, but fortunately, they are not sharp. Right behind the beach, there are many resorts where you can stay.

So we conclude that Uttan Beach is mostly rocky and blackish. The positive side is that hills and coconut trees surround it, and it’s ideal for wading through the frequent waves. Plus, you get great views from the shoreline.

Gorai Beach – is located near Uttan and is a popular destination because of its stunning beaches and serene atmosphere. The beach is so long, that it is allowed to drive it in your car. It is lined with wooden and small houses, and stalls with street food such as Golas, corn on the cob, etc.

A characteristic of this beach is that it is black in color. So imagine what kind of sunset you will experience if you choose it at least for a one-day picnic. 

Manori Beach is considered one of the cleanest beaches in the region. It is hidden from the hustle and bustle with lush greenery and is a refreshing change compared to the crowded beaches.

There are also several resorts nearby to stay. But you have to be careful because it is on the Arabian Sea and here the waves can be very big and forcefully hit the beach.

Kelva Beach is a quiet beach located in close proximity to Uttan. Very few people know about it, so it remains the cleanest and most untouched beach in the vicinity of Uttan.

Following the sound of the waves in the early morning, you can welcome the sunrise. Using this wealth, if you practice meditation, your day will really start very positive and relaxing. 

Arnala Beach is another beach near Uttan. It is decorated with Suru trees on the southern side, providing cool shade on hot days.

It is only recommended for a picnic as the sea is not very safe for swimming. You have to be very careful if you are going to enter these waters. 

Where to stay when in Uttan

Although it is a small coastal village, it still offers a large choice of accommodation. However, it is recommended that your stay is booked before your trip. During peak times, it is difficult to find a free place to stay, so make sure you get it in time. 

Resort – they are truly luxurious, and offer all-inclusive services. If you want to explore more about the area, you need to plan your time according to the hotel’s daily agenda (regarding the time for breakfast, lunch, and dinner).

Hotel – one budget-friendly accommodation option. Although it is not as luxurious as resorts and hotels, it is still a good choice and comfortable, and you can plan your time yourself. 

Homestays – some locals rent part of their homes to tourists. This is an excellent choice for those who want to truly experience the life and culture of the Uttan people.

The Local Cuisine – the village is known for its delicious seafood. Freshly caught fish, seafood, prawns..and of course the widely heard flavors of Konkani. 

Life in the village – Far from what we call modern everyday life, rural life is different. The inhabitants live in harmony with nature, so it’s something you have to experience up close.
