Travel route and itinerary:
KTDC’s latest offering covers the enchanting destinations of Kumarakom – Vagamon – Thekkady. The excursion commences from the lakeside in Kumarakom, set against the renowned backdrop of the backwaters.
Moving north, the caravan crosses Kottayam and Pala. Glimpses of Kerala’s countryside, lush with golden paddy fields, coconut groves, and rustic hamlets with villagers busy with daily life, warm the heart.
The terrain changes as the climb starts towards the charming Vagamon hill station. Lush tea estates, forests, and picturesque waterfalls appear on the journey to the top. The distance of 80-100 kms from Kumarakom to Vagamon is covered in half a day.
At Vagamon hill station:
Rolling hills, cool breezes, and misty valleys welcome you as you reach the magical Vagamon in the afternoon. After a bit of rest, you can go for trekking or nature walks to admire the area.
After a gathering with other travelers near a bonfire, you can opt to spend the night in the Caravan or stay at the nearby KTDC property.
On the next day, you can avail opportunities for trekking, paragliding, rock climbing, and mountaineering. There are also a few pilgrimage destinations including temples dedicated to Murugan, Kurisumala, and Thangala. Kolahalamedu, with its towering pine trees and needle-covered branches, is the highest point in Vagamon. Additional attractions that warrant your attention are Pine Valley, Mooppanpara, and Eco Point.
Those willing to stay back in Vagamon can do so. Others can continue the Caravan journey to Thekkady.
The road moves southwards now, descending through terraced tea estates and quaint villages. Verdant valleys and densely vegetated forests line the road all the way down. The fragrance of spice plantations such as cardamom, pepper, and cinnamon waft in the air.
Thekkady:
We reach Thekkady, lying on the outskirts of Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, soon. In Thekkady, one can explore the biodiverse sanctuary home to elephants, tigers, birds, and diverse plant species. A boat safari in Periyar is also a great opportunity to view the park.
The lovely Caravan trip comes to an end in Thekkady. The enchanting trip not only offers scenic landscapes but also gives travelers an opportunity and time to meet the locals and see their life up close.
Advantages of Caravan travel:
Here are some advantages of opting for this mode of tourism over road transport options such as cars, bikes, or buses:
Convenience:
You have the option to relax in comfortable chairs while enjoying the landscape or unwind in bunker beds. You can also prepare your own meals and travel with your entire family in a single vehicle. The amenities offered rival those of a traditional home, making it feel like you are traveling with your home in tow.
Affordable Price:
The price offered by KTDC is INR.3999/- per person, which is competitive compared to other caravan service providers and affordable for most travelers, whether Indian or foreign. A Caravan can accommodate a group of 2 kids and 4 adults, allowing you to bring along both your parents and children if you wish.
Savings on Accommodation and Food Costs:
A road trip with a Caravan saves a lot of money on accommodation and food. When you are traveling with friends or family, you save even more money on expenses such as fuel. Entertainment is free with a Wi-Fi-connected TV. KTDC offers free Caravan parking and camping areas as well. Moreover, you can enjoy low-cost activities like sightseeing and fishing en route through unscheduled short stops.
Luxurious Experience:
Caravan road trips prioritize comfort and indulgence, providing travelers with the highest level of comfort and sophistication in the form of amenities inside the van. The exclusiveness and attention to detail are present throughout the trip.
Nature:
As the Caravan ambles along, you are surrounded by nature in all its splendor. You can immerse yourself in its beautiful views through the sunroof or the massive windows in the car.
No Luggage Constraints:
There are no limits on baggage you can carry in a Caravan. This is a great option for people traveling with young kids who need space for extra clothes, toys, and food. Kids also have plenty of space to move about without seat constraints.
Making Memories:
Since you can travel with friends or family, you can sing, dance, play, or engage in any sort of group activities that will make your experience memorable.
