A country music superstar has made a major announcement after teasing “a thing” is happening.
Darius Rucker has moved out of the U.S. and is now living in London, England. Reps for the singer told his hometown newspaper, The Post and Courier in Charleston, South Carolina, that he hopes living in the UK will help “to inspire new creative endeavors and perform for international audiences.”
“I can’t move to London and not play UK shows! Do you have your tickets yet?” Rucker revealed in an Instagram post last week.
Rucker, 58, has shows scheduled in London next month plus more UK Shows in the fall. He previously teased the news with a photo in London with his two dogs.
“So Freddie, Larry and I are doing a thing,” he wrote. “Any guesses?”
Rucker still maintains a home in South Carolina, where he first made it big in the 1990s with his band Hootie & The Blowfish. He’ll also continue to perform in America, including an upcoming Aug. 1 concert at the Seneca Niagara Resort & Casino in Niagara Falls, N.Y.
He also confirmed that he still considers S.C. “home.”
“I’m living in London while working on some new music and playing some shows,” Rucker said Saturday. “Always been on the bucket list — but don’t get it twisted y’all … nothing will ever replace the Carolinas and it is still home.”
“Thanks for believing in me and supporting my music wherever we make it. Love y’all!”
Rucker, who has three adult children who live in the U.S., did not give any other explanation for the life change. He was arrested on drug charges in Tennessee last year, but avoided jail after pleading no contest to one count of simple possession of a controlled substance in Williamson County.
The musician is a three-time Grammy Award winner who rose to fame as the lead singer for Hootie & The Blowfish, known for songs like “I Go Blind,” “Only Wanna Be With You,” and “Hold My Hand.” Rucker has also released seven albums as a solo artist with country hits “Wagon Wheel,” “It Won’t Be Like This for Long,” “This,” “Homegrown Honey,” and “Beers and Sunshine.”
