Antara Cruises invests INR800 crore to redefine India’s river tourism, expanding luxury voyages, boosting shipbuilding, and creating jobs in West Bengal.
In a significant step toward transforming India’s river tourism landscape, Antara Cruises has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the West Bengal Transport Department at the Bengal Global Business Summit (BGBS) 2025. Under this agreement, the company has committed to investing INR800 crore over the next five years to elevate luxury river cruise offerings, strengthen shipbuilding capabilities, and reinforce West Bengal’s reputation as a premier river tourism destination.
Currently, Antara Cruises operates high-end river voyages from Kolkata to key destinations such as Dhaka, Guwahati, Patna, and Varanasi. This new investment will pave the way for the construction of advanced cruise vessels at Kolkata’s shipyards, leveraging India’s shipbuilding expertise to modernize the sector while maintaining the region’s historic riverine traditions.
The initiative is poised to generate thousands of jobs, with a particular focus on employing local skilled professionals and laborers. By enhancing shipbuilding infrastructure, Antara Cruises aims to position West Bengal as a leading hub for river transport innovation and tourism development.

This collaboration aligns with a broader initiative led by the West Bengal government, which has also secured agreements with two additional companies at BGBS 2025. The government will facilitate the project by granting access to existing jetties and potentially leasing additional docking points, ensuring smooth operations as the cruise fleet expands.
Sustainability remains a key priority for Antara Cruises. The company has implemented eco-friendly solutions, including advanced sewage treatment facilities, water purification systems, and efficient waste management practices, to minimize its environmental impact. By integrating sustainability with luxury travel, Antara Cruises is not only enhancing the passenger experience but also safeguarding India’s river ecosystems for generations to come.
